Train Information of Southwest Nigeria

It’s been 4 years since I experienced my first train ride from Lagos to Kwara. However, I am more excited to experience this train ride because of the massive development that had taken place in the rail transportation sector and there’s so much media buzz around it. There is an ongoing overhaul of the train management from Lagos to Kano and I can’t wait to experience it.

New Coaches of the Nigerian Railway Corporation

The Federal Ministry of Transport commissioned the China Civil Engineering Construction Corporation (CCECC) as the contractor for the Nigerian Railway Modernization Project. It has been an ongoing project since April 2017. The first phase is the realization of a new standard gauge railway line from Lagos to Kano with connections to Abuja via Minna and Kaduna with a total length of 1315km while the second phase is the implementation of the Lagos – Ibadan section with a length of 157km. The track includes a double gauge of 1435mm with a design speed of 200km/h providing mixed passenger and freight services.

A new management had been set up and Modern ‘state of the art’ train stations is undergoing near complete construction across Lagos, Abeokuta and Oyo states. New coaches have been acquired with fully fitted air conditioners and locomotives. In addition, rail tracks had been upgraded while tickets are available in economy, business and first class categories. The official commencement of the Lagos- Abeokuta- Ibadan rail service operations was announced by Mr. Jerry Oche, the Railway District Manager in Lagos, following the official commissioning by President Muhammadu Buhari on June 10, 2021 while operations commenced fully on June 15th, 2021.
